assignment 1-1

Popular culture is the sum of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred per an informal consensus within the normal of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the up-and-coming global conventional of the late 20th and early 21st century. Which is heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society (Michael F. Petracca, Madeleine, Sorapure).
Personally, when I think of popular culture I picture fashion because fashion changes every day from clothes that were popular in the 50’s are now coming in style. Another thing I think of when asked what popular is would have to be technowledgy it has changed dramatically from past decades people in the 21 century have I phones, flat screen TV’s, and Mac laptops, popular culture is also about food because food is a big part of culture and in this generation people tend to buy what the media suggests.
In a business environment it is important to understand popular culture because people need to know what is going on in the world whether it is politics, fashion, agriculture and even technolwdgy for example in the future if I decided to open a restaurant it is very important to know the culture in the area that I plan to open my restaurant as well as my competition so I can know what type of food my business will provide.
An example of a pop culture artifact I would have to pick the movie, The Lord of the Rings written by J.R.R Tolken and produced by Peter Jackson. The particular artifact would have to be the tree beard toy with Merry and Pippin on the tree, the tree talks and lights up, I remember target sold them at the time the two towers movie came out. All three movies are very popular in our society and people love the mystery behind every making of the movie, one thing that makes it a great pop culture is that it is a science fiction and fantasy. Every creature, tree, and human in the movie is a perfect example of pop culture.

  1. This is a great example of pop culture. The Lord of the Rings in some ways was the new "Star Wars" of our time. The good verses evil, the magical lands and fairy tales of powerful people. I remember seeing the tree beard toy and other action figures from the movie in stores. Good example of pop culture.
